Five gallon bucket handle fix.

The handle on this bucket digs into your hand because it has no plastic thing.

After carrying this chicken water bucket back and forth all year I decided to do something about it. I wrapped some duck tape around the handle. It is very cushiony and I don't think that I will have any problems with it.

7 Eggs in the Nest box!

So, today when I went out to get eggs there where non. I'm like come on girls. It's not winter yet. But then I opened the nest box and found this.

So, they did lay some eggs for me after all. In the nest box too. 7 in the nest box and 0 out.

Post Planting

So, Sunday afternoon was spent planting posts. But the reason this got on the blog is because, unlike usual, Laura and I ran the skid-steer. We have an auger attachment for it and it is very useful when planting fence posts. It is very hard to use though. After going through the process with Papa, I hopped in the loader and drilled the hole. It was hard with the front end of the loader off the ground and all but I got 3 in and I think I could do it again. Anyway, here are the pics.

We also put in a big gate post down at the barn but I did not take pictures yet. I will next time I am down at the barn.

P.S. I always say down at the barn and that is because the barn is 1/4 mile from the house and it in at the bottom of the hill that our house and field are on.

Chicken Feed 2

So, The other day when I moved the chickens to their new pen I left their food outside for a few hours during the move. When I went to get it and put it in with the chickens I noticed that their food had gotten rained on. Now, I always put it under a roof of some kind and so when I saw that it was wet I did not like it. But after thinking about it I remember looking down into it as I was carrying it and thinking that it looked like the texture of Laura's feed that she would soak. I had a discussion with myself about this here and wrote it down. So now I wonder if I should leave the food out in the rain for it to get wet. No. I should not because if it rains hard (and it does) than the whole thing will just overflow and be waisted. Not cool. Anyway I gotta leave now so,

Oh, wait. I also wanted to tell y'all that I saw a flying squirrel today. I thought they only lived in the jungle but apparently they live around here too. I even saw it glide through the air. It was much faster than in all those nature movies. Probably because they slowed it down on the movies. I think I can stop talking now... I think

Snow

So, today it snowed and I went out and tried to take the same pictures as I took yesterday. Now, all of these pictures were taken free hand. No tri-pod. I didn't even mark the spot that I was standing because I didn't know it was going to snow. Pictures soon. But first some news. Something got into the chicken coop and ate two of her chickens last night. So now she is down to four hens and two roosters. We are planing to butcher the hens as they are way to old to produce many eggs. We need to do it as soon as we can because as soon as they are out than I can put my chickens in the coop. Right now they are fine outside but soon they will need to get out of the snow and cold. It is still cold in the coop in the winter but at least there is no wind. OK, NOW for the pictures.

Farming looks better from afar

It does no mater how you look at it. The best way I can think of describing it is this. When I am out at the chicken pen I look down at the mud and the empty nest box and think why am I doing this. Why do I come out here every day to their muddy pen and exchange their brown ice for fresh water and come back to the house with an empty feed bag and step into the house and look down at the empty egg basket. But then I look up across the fields and pasture and see cows grazing and smooth hay fields. I step back and look at the many colored chickens pecking around in the garden and at our little creek that twists and turns through the woods bringing fresh water to deer, squirrels, birds, and the occasional bear. After this I know that this is why I do it. Now I won't lie to you, it's not as bad as I make it sound. I only have to give them more feed every few weeks and I do get 2 or 3 eggs a day. From 14 chickens I think they should give me at least ten a day. But it is getting colder and the days are getting shorter. They will give more come spring. maybe they will even give me a few chicks if I barrow Laura's roosters. The visitors just got here so I have to leave.

That's what I am. Since Sunday anyway. Laura gave me some of her chickens and Mom got me a bullwhip. Needless to say the boys have been working hard ever since then. Just kidding. I don't hit them with it. They have been working hard though. We all have. See, because Papa has off work, we have off school so we are getting ready for winter. Fixing trucks, splitting wood, fixing fence, and butchering deer that were given to us. I try to shoot deer but I am still learning and haven't been where the deer are in the daylight yet. I'll try to post soon.

Pics from the chicken pen

I put the charger on a T-post so that it can get more sunlight. I am very happy with it. It's very sturdy. This also keeps it out of the dirt and it makes it easy to find for somebody if they are feeding them for me. Now for the pics.

The sun is coming up.

This one always follows me around. It's not wanting food because they have all they want in the feeder. Whenever I reach down to pet it it will stop in its tracks, spread the middle of its wings out but with the tips still touching its body and look up at me. It will only do it if I come straight down from the top and if it is not moving at the moment. Not sure what is wrong with it. If any one knows please comment.
