So, I've been checking the nesting box of the chicken tractor that the turkeys are in every few days. When I looked in this morning THERE WERE TWO TURKEY EGGS! One of my bantams and Lady have been laying for a week or two now but this is the first TURKEY egg! Heck, I think this is the first turkey egg I've ever SEEN! Anyway, SUPER excited (encase ya couldn't tell)! Soon it will warm up to the point where I can get the eggs before they freeze. Then I'mma incubate! I plan to have some hatching eggs for sale sometime soon and maybe some poults too! We'll see... For now you'll just haveta wait...in...extreme...anticipation...
Yes, I know, it's been a while. Hey, I'm not perfect either! I've been keeping up(ish) on youtube though! So, if you'd like to be getting updates and such head on over there by scrolling down all the way and a link should pop up. (new feature :D )
Anyway, I know y'all came here for the pictures so here ya are...
It is at this point in which I usually/often promise another post but I am purposely leaving this empty...well, not really EMPTY empty but...ya get mah point.
Well, it happened again. This spring I had a bunch of chickens die from impacted crops(i think) and now I had a bunch more die. This time though it wasn't a disease or anything like that. This time it was predators. One moment I had all of 'm and the next I was down to 12 or 13(+ feathers). The reason that they got my chickens was that I had forgotten to close the front door on he chicken coop and basically let them in. Even though they are just chickens(not really important) I still feel kinda bad cuz I was supposed to be taking care of them and I forgot about them and they died.
Joshua's calf in the back and Blitz, laura's calf, in the front
The small yellow chick in the next few pics is from one of my light brahma hens and my ISA rooster(sold now). He/she is dead now but it was fun watching it grow into different colors. Black, white, yellow, red, I like mutli-color animals.
White, yellow, and a little black on the chest.
All three again on the back and sides.
One of the three black bantam cochin/yellow silkie chicks
Love the feet!
Turkeys!!!
Two white silkie hens and the white silkie roo. The rooster died for some reason recently. :/
Another great hay wagon pic.
The new chicks
The brooder
Ok, that's all for the pics. I'll try to get some more sometime.
Here's another video of me walking around talking my head off. I don't know how long it is but if you like long this is for you! I usually try for shorter but I took this anyway. Here:
Ok, so, the neighbors lab (who roams the fields and farms around here) found my turkeys
While they were out
And caught some
Two to be exact.
One of the turkeys that she caught was fine but the other was bleeding a little and was all hunched over. That was Saturday. By now, (Wednesday) I can't even tell which ones were caught. They are all healthy and growing fast. Getting darker in color too! Anyway, here's the video...
3 of the turkeys ran off about a week ago. I have read stories on the internet of people's free range turkeys and how they will fly off for a week or two and then show back up. I'm hoping that mine will do the same this time but I think they probably got eaten as they were too young to fly very far. At least I have these 6.
Zach, my 7 year old brother, took every one of these photos with my Nikon D40.
Here, they are...
My entire flock (Of Turkeys. I have waaayy more chickens:) )
You may notice something wrong with this turkeys feet. All of the turkeys have it. When they were in the brooder (Wire Floor) their feet bled often. I'm not sure why this was happening but after I moved them onto grass it cleared up. What you see is the remaining scabs and also some dirt.
The next few pictures are of my light brahma hen who is raising chicks for me. 6 bantam cochin buffs and one silkie. One of the cochins is darker, bigger, bigger comb, and better at keeping up with their 'Mom'. I think he's a rooster and the rest are pullets. If he is a rooster the name cogburn is designated.
Anyway look at the pictures and take a guess at gender on the dark one.
The outside temp ranged from 77 to 61
And the incubator temp ranged from 100.6 to 95.3 (Which is way too much variation)
So I'm going to bring it inside so that the temp outside the incubator will stay kinda the same so that the incubator will not have much trouble keeping it the same temp.
Anyway, I'll keep experimenting with it to get it to stay the same temperature.
So, I left Thursday on a trip to visit some friends and I just got back. Anyway, while I was gone my brothers took care of my animals. I forgot to tell them to remove any new eggs under my broody hen and so by the time I got back she had built up a lot more. I think that because she had too many all of them are dead but I will candle them tonight.
Anyway, if they are all dead I will take them out and give her some chicks. I will do a turkey video today and upload it soon.
I have one of the three silkie chicks left. When the first one died I think it was pasty but but the second looked clean. The third has been healthy and vigorous the whole time.
Anyway, they are one month old today (The turkeys and bantams) so soon they will be outside during the day.
Anyway, thank you to anyone and everyone who reads my blog.
So, yea. Not really a good survival rate but it was our first time with meat chickens. I don't think I am going to do it again this summer. I might sometime but for now I will stick to egg layers.
Anyway, last night I bought 3 3 week old partridge silkie chicks. They are about as big as my 3 week old bantam cochin chicks. This may have been a good investment as they will hatch eggs for me but it also may have been a bad idea as I now want to order 10 more silkies.
I was sitting here by the computer this morning thinking about different things and I remembered that I had to do a video of the turkeys.I jumped out of my chair, grabbed my camera and went out to their brooder.
I remember thinking "Hurry, before they grow any more!"
Thinking back it sounds silly but nevertheless that is what was going through my head in those few seconds.
That is one of my favorite things about animals
The change
They are always changing them or the thing around them;
The pasture gets short, the young'ns grow up, the coop gets cleaned
OK, well that last one will be me, not the chickens.
